IDA Medical Abbreviation

IDA is a medical abbreviation for iron deficiency anemia. It’s a type of anemia that occurs when the body doesn’t have enough iron stores. Iron deficiency anemia is the most common cause of anemia.

Causes of Iron deficiency anemia

  • Diets low in iron
  • Blood loss
  • Difficulty with iron absorption
  • The body’s need for more iron

Symptoms of IDA include:

  • Pale or sallow skin
  • Unexplained fatigue
  • Shortness of breath or chest pain, especially during activity
  • Delays with child development or problems with school performance
  • Fast heartbeat
  • Headache

Some risk factors for IDA include:

  • Heavy menstrual bleeding
  • Pregnancy or lactation
  • A diet low in iron-rich foods, or a strict vegetarian or vegan diet
  • Certain cancers
  • Peptic ulcer disease
  • Celiac disease
  • Crohn’s disease
  • A history of intestinal or gastric bypass surgery
  • Taking certain medications, such as antacids, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), or tetracycline 

Treatment for Iron deficiency anemia

  • Eating more foods with iron such as Meats, Vegetables
  • Eating balanced diet
  • Taking iron pills

A scientific report on the Springer Nature postulated that there is a risk of fibromyalgia in patients with iron deficiency anemia.
