OGD Medical Abbreviation

OGD is an abbreviation for oesophago-gastro-duodenoscopy, a medical procedure that examines the upper digestive tract:

What is OGD?

An OGD is a procedure that allows a doctor or nurse to examine the upper digestive tract, including the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum. It’s also known as a Gastroscopy or Endoscopy. The name Endoscopy comes from the small and flexible tube called endoscope that uses camera to view the lining of the digestive tracts.

How it is performed?

A flexible tube called a gastroscope is passed through the mouth and into the upper digestive tract. The gastroscope has a light and camera that sends images to a television screen.

What is OGD used for

An OGD can help identify inflammation or disease, and tissue samples can be taken for analysis. It can be used to identify sources of abdominal pain, heartburn, nausea, or other digestive issues.

OGD Procedure

The procedure usually takes about 5–10 minutes, but you may need to wait for check-in and recovery. You may feel slightly uncomfortable when the camera is first inserted, and you might feel bloated after air is used to inflate the stomach. You should not eat or drink for about an hour after the procedure.
