Painkiller tablets are medications that relieve pain and are also known as analgesics. They can treat a variety of pain, including headaches, muscle aches, and arthritis.

Types of painkiller tablets

  • Acetaminophen: The most common over-the-counter painkiller, also known by the brand name Tylenol 
  • Ibuprofen: A non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that reduces swelling and pain 
  • Aspirin: An NSAID that reduces inflammation and pain 
  • Codeine: An opioid that blocks pain messages in the brain and spinal cord 
  • Co-codamol: A compound analgesic that combines paracetamol and codeine 

How they work

Different painkillers work in different ways. For example, NSAIDs reduce inflammation by stopping the body from producing prostaglandins, which cause pain and inflammation.

  • Anticonvulsants, such as gabapentin, pregabalin, or carbamazepine
  • Antidepressants, such as amitriptyline or duloxetine
  • Muscle relaxants
  • Corticosteroids
When to seek advice
If you’re taking several painkillers, you should read the patient information leaflets to avoid taking too much. You should also contact your doctor if you’re taking narcotics and feel you may be addicted.
