Infections That Could Be Causing Your Pain

Infections that can cause pain include: urinary tract infections (UTIs), tooth abscesses, skin infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus (staph), shingles (herpes zoster virus), HIV, hepatitis C, some bacterial gastrointestinal infections, and certain viral infections like those causing viral arthritis, all of which can trigger inflammation and nerve pain in the affected area depending on the site of infection.

Infections cause pain primarily through the inflammatory response triggered by the immune system when fighting invading pathogens. This in turn leads to swelling, redness, and irritation of surrounding tissues, directly activating pain receptors (nociceptors) in the area. In addition, some bacteria can directly stimulate nerve cells to produce pain signals, even without significant inflammation

Bacteria:

Common bacterial infections causing pain include UTIs (often due to E. coli), tooth abscesses, and skin infections from staph bacteria.
Viruses:

The herpes zoster virus, responsible for shingles, is a well-known cause of significant pain due to its impact on nerves. Other viral infections like HIV and hepatitis C can also be associated with chronic pain.
Pain mechanism:

Infections trigger inflammation, which can irritate nearby nerves, leading to pain perception.

Symptoms

Fever, chills, and sweats
Coughing, sore throat, or mouth sores
Shortness of breath
Nasal congestion
Diarrhea, vomiting, or abdominal pain
Redness, soreness, or swelling
Painful urination
Unusual vaginal discharge
Headache, muscle aches, or feeling generally unwell

Complications

Sepsis: A serious complication that occurs when the body’s infection-fighting processes turn on the body’s organs
Septic shock: A dramatic drop in blood pressure that can damage the lungs, kidneys, liver, and other organs

Immune system response

The body’s immune system responds to infections by sending white blood cells and antibodies to fight the infection. Fever is one of the body’s ways of fighting infections, as heat inactivates many viruses.

Viruses can make people sick by killing cells or disrupting cell function. Bacteria can make people sick by multiplying rapidly, killing cells, or producing toxins
